Described as late as 1950 as the most perfect of the smaller Bloomsbury squares. Immediately south of Gordon Square, and contemporary with it, Woburn Square originally extended further south but now forms part of the university campus.

Named after the Duke of Bedford’s seat, Woburn Abbey, the square was originally surrounded by Georgian houses built in 1828 by James Sim.
