Whitgift School CR2
Open:
Sunday 10:00–17:00
Description:
The beautiful Haling Park is now the grounds of Whitgift, an independent boys school. In 1588 the estate was the home of Lord Howard of Effingham, the Lord High Admiral of the Fleet sent against the Armada. The grounds were designed by Humphry Repton, with many superb specimen trees. A copse remains from the old medieval woodland.
There is a Tudor-style garden with a maze, a small, modern, formal Japanese garden, a quadrangle with exotic birds, including peacocks and cranes and the Whitgift Rose Garden. The Water Gardens were opened by Sir David Attenborough in 2005, and contain birds from every continent and Bennett's wallabies, descendants of those presented to HM the Queen in 1953.
