Description:
West Norwood Cemetery is one of the metropolitan cemeteries founded to deal with the expanding population of London in the early 19th century. It was opened in 1837 and is still an operational cemetery, now owned by Lambeth Council.
It has 65 Grade II- and Grade II*-listed monuments and includes memorials to Mrs Beeton, Sir Henry Doulton, Dr William Marsden, Baron Julius de Reuter, Charles Spurgeon and Sir Henry Tate. The cemetery as a whole is listed Grade II* by English Heritage.
As a result of the efforts of the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, numerous monuments have been repaired or more substantially restored during the past two decades, and an extensive programme of monument and infrastructure works, directed by Lambeth Council, has been proceeding for several years. A new memorial garden has been constructed for cremated remains.
