Description:
This 16-year-old forest garden, inspired by forest garden pioneer Robert Hart, set in the grounds of a children’s nursery.
A forest garden is made up of a series of ‘guilds’, with large trees, smaller trees, shrubs, climbers, groundcover plants, roots and fungi. A guild is a system of beneficial relationships and can be repeated over any area, from a small yard to many hectares.
This garden shows sustainable food growing and collective input, productive urban land management and a no-compost woodland system in action. It is also a healing and nurturing environment to interact with.
This is also a low-water garden, like a forest. The main task in maintenance is mulching and not doing too much work! Except harvesting.
The garden is used each day by the nursery school, and looked after by volunteers at weekends.
