Description:
Mayow Park community growing project is being developed in partnership with Lewisham Council to support the launch of the Council's new community gardens guide to help local communities get together to grow their own food organically.

The project is sited at Envirowork Lewisham's plant nursery in Mayow Park, Sydenham, which was created from a derelict park keeper's depot, and consists of a series of demonstration gardens and allotments built by Envirowork trainees as part of their training and employment programme.

The site is designed to give residents and community groups ideas on how they could develop their own community gardens, ranging from a herb and vegetable garden to a potager garden and shows planters crafted from tyres, pallets, bricks and sleepers, with examples of planters and pathways designed for people with disabilities.

The project runs gardening workshops and free drop-in sessions for adults, families, local schools and local community groups and incorporates a special-needs element, allowing all to learn about growing food and how to develop their own community gardens to support Lewisham Council's target of creating 62 community gardens by 2012.
