Description:
Purchased from the Bedford Estate in 1951, the Sunken Gardens in Malet Street to the rear of 2–20 Gower Street are private gardens owned by the University of London and provide a haven of peace in Bloomsbury.
Bordered by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to the north, the University of London's Senate House to the east and the British Museum to the south, the garden is located within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area.
The gates, boundary walls and railings to the rear of the Gower Street houses, together with the main gate to the garden, are all listed Grade II.
There are original wrought-iron railing stubs on the garden's boundary walls but all the original railings were removed during WW2 to assist the war effort.
