Kilmorey Mausoleum Wildlife Garden
(Photo: Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames)

Open:
Sunday 13:00–17:00
Description:
This award-winning triangular garden surrounds the Kilmorey Mausoleum in St Margarets, Twickenham and covers one third of an acre. The splendid Egyptian-style mausoleum was built in 1854 by Lord Kilmorey for his mistress, Priscilla Ann Hoste, and is a Grade II*-listed building, well hidden in its garden behind high brick walls next to a main road.

Volunteers from the Environment Trust for Richmond-upon-Thames have looked after the grounds since 2004, and planted native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, as well as a meadow. Organic gardening and recycling are key features in this sustainable wildlife garden; a composting toilet was added two years ago and has proved very popular, especially with children. There is also a wormery, plus leaf and compost bins, so that all our garden waste is recycled within the site as surface mulches, compost, log piles etc.

There are plenty of seats from which to enjoy both the garden and our delicious Eco Teas that feature homemade cakes and hot drinks made with water boiled in Kelly Kettles, fuelled by burning twigs.
