Description:
The Sunken Garden sits in the centre of the Hammersmith Estate, built in 1926 – the last Peabody estate constructed with a separate bathhouse. The folk memory is that the garden was once the burial ground of a convent that stood on the site.
During WW2 the estate was badly bombed and the garden suffered extensive damage. Working closely with residents, Peabody has restored the garden to its former glory. Peabody provides homes for more than 50,000 Londoners and will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2012.
