Description:
Brompton Cemetery is the most central and one of the best preserved of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries created in the countryside outside London between 1830 and 1841. Thanks to much improvement work in recent years, it now provides a wonderful recreational 'lung' in this part of London.
The cemetery site is listed Grade I and contains a Grade II-listed chapel, colonnades and memorials, and thousands of other memorials. There are more than 60 species of trees - and many other interesting flora and fauna. The surroundings provide opportunities for pursuing a wide range of cultural and historical interests, as well as exercise and quiet recreation.
Many world-famous people are among the 210,000 buried here. And it is still a working cemetery, with fresh burials taking place most weeks.
Activities:
The Friends of Brompton Cemetery will open the chapel (normally closed) each day from 1-5pm. Guided tour of the cemetery starting at 2pm from the chapel. The tour lasts about two hours, but you can leave when you wish. There is no formal charge, but donations of perhaps £4 are always welcome to support our work. Literature and postcards about the cemetery on sale. Wildflower walk on Saturday at 2pm, led by Roy Vickery as part of the Royal Borough's events programme.
