The Garden

This square encloses a peaceful green haven in this busy Bayswater enclave. The gardens are currently undergoing a careful ecological regeneration aimed at creating a stronger ecosystem through soil enrichment. Activities include leaf composting, spreading of woodchip and nurturing of plentiful worms in a worm farm. The revitalised ecosystem will benefit birds, squirrels and hedgehogs as well as the square's resident bats and owls. Five-storey stucco-fronted houses surround the gardens. Built in 1858 by Henry de Bruno Austin, these Grade II-listed properties were designed as family properties for the then-emerging professional classes. They have since been turned into flats and hotels.
